ALLUMINIUM BOATBUILDING
Build the hull and superstructure
Heavy fabrication
Cut, shape, form and weld aluminium alloy plate from 5mm to 100mm thick
Build modules and assemble into boat
Build to tight tolerances
Typically start a new boat every 6 months

MARINE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Install the systems for the boat to operate
Heavy and light fabrication
Propulsion, steering, fuel, plumbing, winches, hatches, air conditioning, refrigeration, drainage, ladders, railing, biminis, passerelles, hydraulics and pneumatics
Involves all engineering skills - fabrication, welding, fitting, machining, sheet metal work, pipe work in alloy and stainless steel

MARINE CABINET MAKING
Build and fit cabinets and woodwork into boats
Lay soles and erect bulkheads
Lay teak decks, fit capping rails, build outdoor furniture
Fit-out saloons, cabins, crew mess, galley, laundry, pilot house
Work with high quality exotic timbers
Machining, veneering, marquetry
Highest quality construction and finish required

ELECTRICAL
Install the boat’s electrical systems
Lay around 200km of electrical and electronic cabling in each boat
Manufacture and install switchboards
Wire up engine room, galley, laundry, pilot house and cabins
A mix of industrial, commercial and domestic systems
Voltages from 24v DC to 400v AC 3-phase

INTERIOR FINISHING
Paint everything that needs painting inside the boat
Bilges, engine room, forepeak, lazarette, engine room components,
cabinets, bulkheads, deckheads, floors, furniture
A mix of spray booth and on-boat work
Highest standard of finish required

EXTERIOR FINISHING
Paint the entire outside of the boat
Prepare the aluminium for painting
Fill the imperfections with filling compound, plane and sand for a
perfectly fair surface
Build coves and lips with filling compound
Apply primer and build coats
Tent and mask for painting
Highest standard of finish required

NZQA L4 Trade Certificates
8000 hours (approx 4 years) to complete
Alloy Boatbuilding
Marine Systems Engineering
Marine Cabinet Making
Electrical Engineering (Electrician for registration)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
NCEA 2
Trades technology exposure/experience

SELECTION PROCESS FOR APPRENTICES
Submit CV
Attend interview
Numeracy and spatial recognition tests
One week of work experience
Offer of apprenticeship
Up to 6 months trial period
Sign training agreement with ITO
(Each step must be passed to move to the next)

TRAINING
Training is a mix of on-the-job, night classes and block courses
Training is on-the-job only with no formal qualification in the painting trades
